A.R.Rahman was announced as the winner of the award for Best Music for Slumdog Millionaire at the British Academy Film Awards or the BAFTAs, the British equivalent of the Oscars, at the ceremony held at the Royal Opera House in London on the 8th of February, 2009.

The other contenders included Alexandre Desplat for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard for The Dark Knight, Thomas Newman for Wall-E and Benny Andersson, Björn Ulvaeus for Mamma Mia.

Slumdog Millionaire picked up six other awards including Best Film and Best Director.
